The National Reproductive Health Program has not received any funding from the Ministry of Health in recent years. Under these circumstances, Roma women had to obtain contraceptives on their own and pay for family planning consultations and IUD fitting surgeries or tubal ligation. Continued funding of the National Reproductive Health Program and realistic solutions at the local level that meet the needs of women from vulnerable environments are necessary, as Roma women in the communities cannot afford to purchase contraceptives or pay for surgical interventions.

The Roma women in our communities value the work of the health mediators. The health mediators are those who know where to send them when they encounter health issues, and also do health education, explain certain procedures, and inform the women regarding their rights. However, the number of Roma mediators is insufficient, not to mention that most often, they are overwhelmed due to other duties and responsibilities beyond their job description.

Roma women from Valea Seacă, Bacău County, told us how difficult it is for them to access maternity and reproductive health medical services. For them, the only hospital services are at a great distance from home, in Bacău (43 km) or Adjud (22 km). When medical emergencies occur, such as childbirth, ambulances come late or don't come at all, so the women in labor call relatives or neighbors who own a car in order to give birth at the hospital, attended by a doctor.
